Featured Wood White Pine |
||||
|
White Pine is also known as Eastern White Pine,northern white pine, northern pine, Weymouth pine, Quebec yellow, cork pine, and pumpkin pine. White Pine is the state tree of Maine and Michigan, and can be found from Newfoundland, Ontario and Manitoba in Canada, south throughout New England and the Great Lakes Region to South Carolina. White Pine has characteristics of being soft, weak, and light with low decay resistance. It is very stable in service, finishes well, takes a stain nicely, and is easy to work with. It is used for carvings and sculpture, millwork, sash, doors, trim, paneling, cabinetry, furniture, toys, novelties, musical instrument components, caskets, boxes, match sticks, veneer, dowels, and patterns. It is used for pyrography and some burners prefer it, although it does take some skill to burn it properly. The light color and softness does allow for several degrees of shading but the "rings" can be difficult to burn over. See the Beginner's Corner and the Hints and Tips section of this newsletter for some tips on burning on it.
