Don't forget to sign up for the Applied Pyrography Site Ring on the links page. If there isn't participation it will have to be canceled. If you join it, it will help in your Search Engine rankings by giving you another link.

I've discussed the organization of the newsletter with a few folks who have participated and we have decided to try and develop themes that are related to the holidays that are coming up. Certainly a Fall project is in the works and we are also hoping for something for the Christmas/New Years holidays. Any ideas or suggestions would be appreciated. If you have a project we can include please email me: newsletter@southwestwoodcrafts.com

The project for this issue is using color on a woodburning. Danette did a great job and it will be of great interest to all.

The next issue should have some holiday related projects...stay tuned!

Hope you enjoy this issue,

LAter, Bill

The tutorial on coloring a woodburning, is on page 2

Instead of a pattern for this issue there is a picture of an example of civil war poker art!

The "Featured Wood" section has a great article by Barbara Cramer concerning how to critique works of art.

Smoke Rings

What the heck is this section? Well, I thought that there should be an area where folks can post short articles of interest that don't fall into any of the other categories. So submit your thoughts and we will see if we can keep this section going. Heck you even get another free link, which will help with the Search Engine rankings and they have a long life because the Applied Pyrography Newsletters are kept on the web.

Dreams do come true

I harbored a secret dream for 18 years.

I am a self-taught pyrographic artist. I saw noted entertainer Wayne Newton at a concert in 1985. I bought a program at the concert and saw many photos of Wayne in it. However, one photo really caught my eye. It was a photo of Wayne dressed in his native Indian clothes. I thought to myself, "I've got to do a woodburning of this!"

I did the woodburning that week and since that time I have longed for the opportunity to present the plaque to him in person.

I saw where Wayne was coming to do a concert in Sandusky, Ohio at a theater close to me. I decided to e-mail him to see if we could meet so that I could give him my woodburning. I enclosed a picture of the plaque so that he could see it.

What I got in return was way more than I expected! Two weeks later I received a reply to my e-mail saying that "Mr. Newton would like to invite you to attend the concert and then meet backstage with him to present him the plaque. Two tickets will be waiting for you at the box office."

On Aug. 24, 2003 my dream came true. My free tickets were located way up in the balcony and Wayne looked like a tiny black ant in his tuxedo, but I knew I was going to meet him in person afterwards. Even though I couldn't really see him I could still hear him.

I was stunned when Wayne stopped the show midway and said, "I want to say hi to Danette and George Smith. She is quite an accomplished artist that I look forward to meeting after the show." That was my 5 seconds of fame! LOL.

Following the show we were taken to the stage area where we waited for 30 minutes for Wayne to freshen up and make his appearance.

He came right over to me, shook my hand and gave me a kiss on the cheek. I told him, "I've been waiting 18 years to give this to you.' He loved it! He said, 'I will always cherish it and I will put it up in my home.'"

The exchange completed, Wayne posed for two pictures with me before giving me a goodbye kiss and encouraging me to stay in touch. As we were being escorted out I asked my husband if he got a good picture. "You did check the digital camera to see if you got me and Wayne (who held the plaque for the picture) in it didn't you?" He said, "I'm not sure, I was being rushed".

Of course my heart started racing. I grabbed the camera, turned it on, and found that he got the picture. So you see, dreams really do come true.
