Red Oak is a beautiful wood and is commonly used in the making of fine furniture, cabinets, moulding, trim, flooring, and paneling. It is also know as Northern Red, Southern Red, Black, Shumard, Cherrybark, Scarlet, and Pin. It is openly porous and usually has to be sealed prior
to staining. The distinct open grain is what makes the wood look so nice,
but can be difficult to woodburn. It has to be sanded very smooth and
the woodburning pen has to be at a high temperature. It is difficult to
get a lot of detail when burning the oak because of the grain. The image below is from the beginning of a burn I did on a red oak Urn.
